Iyaz puts his personal phone on the line. We'll back up then try to root a Samsung Galaxy S3.

We're going to root our phone for a longer term project.

First we're going to back up our device in case of catastrophe. We'll use Helium. It can backup your entire device without root.

Backup with Helium

Download the app to your Android device (requires Android 4 or higher), then a desktop client. The free version of Helium lets you backup and restore to SD card or from a PC. Helium Premium gives you more power by letting you backup to your own Dropbox and automatic backup scheduling. The premium version costs $5. The backup of my phone took about 30-40 minutes.

Rooting

To root our device we're using the Samsung Galaxy S3 Toolkit running on a Windows machine. The toolkit supports 14 different S3 variants. By gaining root, you'll be able to do a lot of things like installing multiple ROMS on your device (in a future project hopefully).

The actual rooting process takes a pretty long time, so we compressed things with a video for you. The S3 Toolkit is very comprehensive and walks you through all the steps. Just be patient and it'll be fine. Find out what version of the Galaxy S3 you have by going into your Android Settings > About Device. Take a look at your model and your Android version. You'll need that to start your process.

As you go through the Toolkit process, you'll have to install USB drivers for your PC to communicate to your Galaxy S3. The Toolkit says to uninstall Samsung KIES software to prevent any issues.

After you've installed the drivers, you'll start the rooting process. We chose the ClockWorkMod Recovery option because it is needed for a subsequent project. Then we picked a superuser option -- there's Superuser or SuperSU. According to XDA Developers Forum, it's simply a matter of preference. You can pick either.

Backup again!

Now that we've rooted the phone, let's backup the phone again using the toolkit. This can take a while - the process took about an hour for my personal phone. Be patient!

Calibrating our TV

Why do it? People in the video space agonize over making their products look excellent. Then we watch it on our TVs.

Terms:
• Contrast is really white level. The higher it is, the more details are washed out
• Brightness is really black level, too bright, and you get washed out images
• Color is saturation

The Lookup Method

The simplest method is to do a search and lookup your TV model to find calibration settings. Forums are usually your best bet. I've found CNet and AVSForum excellent sources for various televisions

The TV we have here is the Toshiba 40E220U.

Using Windows Media Center

If you've got a Windows 7 PC, you can hook it up to your TV and use Windows Media Center's built-in tools to help customize your picture

Hardware calibration

Hardware for your computer or TV if you want. This device attaches to your PC's monitor or TV. It'll adjust the output of your computer and not mess with your monitor's settings.

So I had a laptop with a broken screen that I wanted to turn into a print/backup server. My first step was to do a clean install of windows of course, but I ran into a problem. When I rebooted into setup, it would not output to my external monitor and I could not see what I was doing.

After some frustration, I finally found a solution. I tapped the shift key 5 times to turn on accessibility and used descriptive audio to finish the setup.

If you've ever wanted to create your own videos there's plenty to know. We took a field trip to Tom Merritt's house in Los Angeles to see what it takes to create a home studio.

Bandwidth

Tom hosts "Tech News Today" from the comfort of his own home via Skype. However, the first thing he considered was bandwidth. Tom managed to find a place served by fiber that gets him insane speeds. His download speed is 300Mbps, and his upload speed is 65Mbps. ISPs like to tout download speeds, but you definitely want to pay attention to the upload speed if you plan on sending video over the internet.

The Hardware Setup

To Skype, Tom uses an off-the-shelf Mac mini that is wired to his home network via Ethernet (again, getting the best speeds is paramount when dealing with streaming online video).

How video reaches the computer: Canon Vixia HF GF10 > HDMI out > Blackmagic Intensity Extreme HDMI to Thunderbolt adapter > goes into Mac mini.

The Canon Vixia HF G10 uses an HD CMOS sensor to output its signal via HDMI. To get that video into the Mac mini, a Blackmagic Intensity Extreme HDMI to Thunderbolt adapter accepts an HDMI input and then outputs it over Thunderbolt.

For audio, Tom speaks into a Heil PR-40, which is the same kind of mic used at the TWiT Brickhouse Studio. The Heil outputs audio using XLR. To get that signal to the Mac mini, the XLR cable is plugged into a Blue Microphones Icicle adapter, which accepts XLR and outputs over USB.

For more audio complex setups, you can choose to use a USB Mixer like Tom's Mackie PROFX8 mixer.

Lighting

Camera and Lighting Design specialist Brent Bye of OceanStudio.com was called in to make sure the video looks as good as possible. Brent designed the lighting setup at the TWiT Brickhouse studios.

When setting up your studio, survey the entire space. Consider the space as a whole to see where a good shot would be established. Camera framing makes the small brick fireplace behind Tom appear much larger than it is.

Ambient lighting can be problematic when shooting. In general, avoid backlighting like having a big window behind you. For Tom's setup, Brent closed the blinds to eliminate the changing lighting from the sun.

After the camera was set to isolate the background, Brent first lit Tom from behind using two rear lights to highlight Tom's hair. The rim lights separate Tom from the background. The lights Brent used are American DJ (ADJ) brand and are called the Micro Wash WWCW. The acronym stands for "Warm White, Cool White," which means they can produce both outdoor and indoor color temperatures to match existing indoor lights or correctly match any exterior daylight coming into the shooting space.

For the key light, Brent used a single Kino Flo ParaBeam 210. The light is large enough that it lights Tom without the need for a separate fill light. If you're wondering about that old stand-by three-point lighting, Brent says that three-point lighting is antiquated and was for when people were using hard light sources which creates harsh shadows.

Using diffusion allows for softer lighting and is a heat resistant material tough enough to handle the heat of lights. Diffusion looks like wax paper is placed over the light source to create pleasant shadows on the talent. Also, you'll need to control your light - can't have it spilling all over the place. You can use a material called Cinefoil that can be used to direct light. It's like aluminum foil, but tougher.

The Green Screen Controversy

For the first several weeks when Tom would call in from his home studio, the audience would yell, "Green screen! That's no brick wall back there! It must be a green screen - just look at it!" We got to the bottom of that. Brent explained that the combination of a lower resolution camera at Tom's studio (since replaced), in addition to different colored lights in Tom's studio, and the backlighting fooled people into thinking "That's a keyed setup!" A more full explanation is in the episode.

Budget Lighting Setup

Everything you just read applies to lighting in general. You don't necessarily need professional gear to produce good lighting. You can create a key light using a four-foot workshop light that you can pick up at the hardware store. These use fluorescent tube lighting that flicker. That flickering may be picked up by your camera, but you can adjust that using your camera's shutter.

To replicate the backlights we used, you can use inexpensive clamp lights. They cost about $8 each. If you're feeling creative, you can attempt Brent's "Frankenstein Key Light," which places four clamp lights on a cross beam that sits atop a mic stand. Placing diffusion over the four lights creates a softer light and unifies the four light sources. (If you can't picture it, that's why we do a video show).

The money you save on lights can be used to pick up a camera with enough controls (like manual white balance) so you can make excellent looking video.

We set up a Minecraft server on Mac and Windows. Setting one up on Windows is a bit easier than on OS X, but both only take a few minutes of set up.

If you run into Java difficulty, check out "How do I set or change the PATH system variable?" page at Java.com

After you've done that, don't forget your port forwarding. That will allow outside computers to join your game. Every router's interface for port forwarding is a bit different. Your best bet is to visit PortForward.com to find where your router hides it.

Time to get secure. We're going to show you how and why to use TrueCrypt to protect your data from prying eyes.

TrueCrypt is an open source encryption application for on-the-fly encryption. What's "on the fly" encryption? That means that data is available as quickly as unencrypted data. This also means data is encrypted or decrypted right before it is saved or loaded.

TrueCrypt is a cross-platform solution (OS X, Windows, Linux). It installs a device driver into your OS which basically creates a virtual drive out of either a source file or a source partition."

A TrueCrypt file/folder/volume is absolutely useless without your password and/or keyfile. There are some boring things you might want secure: tax info, bank account data, finances (stopping identity theft even if you lose your machine, you're set).

Creating a file container

How do we do this?
• Download TrueCrypt
• Create an encrypted file container
• Either pick a file or put a path
• Choose Encryption and Hash algorithm : Steve Gibson on Security Now says the defaults are sufficient. (but if you want, you can chain your encryption)
• Choose your Volume Size
• Password, Format option
• Then to create your encryption key, you've got to move a mouse cursor around the window. the longer you move the cursor, the stronger the key
• Then you format

If you're going to use the Truecrypt volume on a USB drive, you probably want to keep the Truecrypt.EXE or app on the USB drive.

Hidden volumes

From Truecrypt.org: "A hidden volume can be mounted the same way as a standard TrueCrypt volume: Click Select File or Select Device to select the outer/host volume (important: make sure the volume is not mounted). Then click Mount, and enter the password for the hidden volume. Whether the hidden or the outer volume will be mounted is determined by the entered password (i.e., when you enter the password for the outer volume, then the outer volume will be mounted; when you enter the password for the hidden volume, the hidden volume will be mounted).

In today's episode, Leo explains the things you should know to get the most out of your digital camera.

The three parameters we covered in today's episode were shutter speed, aperture and ISO.

Your shutter speed setting on your camera determines how long the shutter is open when you're taking pictures. It's displayed as a fraction of a second. If you're taking pictures of quick actions, you'll want that shutter to move quickly.

However, you're going to need a well lit subject if your shutter is open for a small amount of time. That's where aperture comes in. Aperture is the hole where light comes in. The larger your aperture, the more light is coming into the camera sensor. In camera lingo, aperture is delineated by "f-numbers" - the lens has a set of "f-stops" that you can set that f-number to.

So what's ISO then? ISO amplifies the image. The higher the ISO, the more noise you'll see in the image. A high ISO means that the camera can amplify the image a lot.

We touched upon the differences between RAW and JPEG shooting. JPEG might create smaller file sizes, but they are a lossy format. Once you take that picture, the only data you have is in that JPEG. RAW shooting keeps all the data the camera is seeing. That leads to much larger file sizes, but you can go in and change a multitude of factors after the fact.
